Pain Management

PAIN MANAGEMENT

No one should live with pain! How many people do you know who are living with pain daily, but don’t think anything can be done to relieve their pain? Maybe it’s an acute injury or maybe it’s chronic pain. How many people do you know who accept pain or reduced range of motion, and “just live with it”? We can fix that, we can resolve your pain, and we can get you back to doing everything you love in life!

Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, but its entrance onto the American medical stage (and people’s attention) only dates back to just about 50 years ago. Ironically, this introduction occurred when President Nixon visited China in the 1970’s, witnessing numerous miracles being performed with Acupuncture in Chinese hospitals and clinics, in everyday experiences. He wanted us to have access to this as-yet-“undiscovered” medicinal practice here. Since the 1970’s, Acupuncture has surged, evolved to suit our American lifestyles, and merged with Biomedical neurologists, Acupuncture researchers,  and American technology to incorporate the best of the old, the best of the East, with the best of the new, the best of the West. Mindful Spirit Acupuncture embodies all of this, and practices technologically-advanced enlightened healing based on thousands of years of healing wisdom.

We treat pain of any kind, including, but not limited to: headaches, migraines, neck pain, back pain, arthritis, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, TMJ, fibromyalgia, nerve pain (such as painful shingles rashes) to headaches, fibromyalgia, and menstrual cramps, post-operative rehabilitation, and much more.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine needles (roughly the width of a few human hairs) into the skin at specific “acupoints”. This relieves pain by breaking up stagnation in the body (which is the imbalance in the body that is causing the pain), and also by releasing endorphins, the body's natural pain-killing chemicals, and further, by affecting the part of the brain that governs serotonin, a brain chemical involved with mood.

Acupuncture has been considered helpful with a lot of stress related problems, pain, and a variety of diseases. It has grown in popularity in America as a complementary treatment to help treat anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, weight loss, infertility, and chronic pain, such as low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, and osteoarthritis. It has gained a lot of acceptance as an alternative treatment for better sleep, better digestion, more energy, mental clarity, and less stress. It has also shown positive results in treating pain associated with chemotherapy for cancer patients.

We apply a variety of modalities of pain-healing treatments besides Acupuncture needles.

These include: Cupping, Herbal Medicine, E-stim (electric stimulation), FSM (Frequency-Specific-Modulation Electric Stimulation), PEMF (pulsed electric magnetic frequency) stimulation, Moxa (heat therapy), Celluma Light Therapy for pain, inflammation, and aches, Gua Sha (massage scraping tool along meridians and in local pain areas), and percussion massagers (Hypervolt, Rapid Release energy-frequency massagers).

ABOUT OUR SERVICES

The first visit to Mindful Spirit Acupuncture is a 90-minute Initial Consultation and First Treatment. Acupuncture incorporates a holistic treatment protocol. So, this first treatment includes an extended patient intake so that we can best treat the whole patient.

Follow-up visits are 60-minute treatments. We focus on treating the root problem, not just the symptoms which bring you here. In this way, we heal the body holistically. Surprisingly, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, symptoms which are unrelated in the Biomedical world are absolutely intrinsically related in Traditional Chinese Medicine systems. The body is an intricate holistic system which is both complex and simple. We unlock time-honored healing techniques which treat the entire body. Our goal is to completely heal you of your physical complaints and keep them from ever coming back.

ABOUT OUR MODALITIES - NOT JUST NEEDLES

Cupping

Acupuncture and cupping, more than half of the ills cured,” is a famous Chinese saying, supporting traditional Chinese medicine. Cupping was established as an official therapeutic practice in the 1950s across hospitals in China after research conducted by Chinese and former Soviet Union acupuncturists confirmed cupping’s effectiveness. Prior to the 1950s, cupping had also been practiced as an auxiliary method in traditional Chinese surgery. In recent years cupping has been growing in popularity, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, David Arquette, and athlete Michael Phelps drawing public attention to the traditional benefits of Chinese cupping therapy techniques.

Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass cups or bamboo jars as suction devices that are placed on the ski to disperse and break up stagnation and congestion by drawing congested blood, energy or other humors to the surface. In dry cupping, the therapist will simply place the suction cups on the skin. In wet cupping, the practitioner will make a small incision on the skin and then apply the suction cup to draw out small amounts of blood.

THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND PAIN AND CUPPING. WHAT IS CUPPING USED FOR?

“Where there’s stagnation, there will be pain. Remove the stagnation, and you remove the pain.” The old Chinese medical maxim holds that pain results from the congestion, stagnation, and blockage of Qi, or vital energy, vital fluids, lymph, phlegm, and blood. If pain is the essence of disease, then suffering is a result of obstructed or irregular flow in the body. Chinese cupping is therefore a method of breaking up the blockage to restore the body’s natural flow of energy.

Gua Sha

Gua sha involves using a smooth-edged tool (like a small wooden spoon, or a gemstone gua sha tool) to gently scrape areas of your body, which raises tiny round spots on your skin. The spots are known as petechiae, and their presence signals that there’s bleeding under the skin.  In fact, “gua” means scrape, while “sha” means sand, referring to the sand-like appearance of petechiae. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, many diseases and health complaints can be traced back to stagnant “qi” (known as life force energy) and blood in the body.  By stimulating petechiae at specific points, gua sha is believed to encourage a healthy flow of energy and blood.

We typically gua sha the skin to prep the areas for cupping, which releases even more deeply setted stagnant qi (thus creating pain) in targeted areas of the body.

E-Stim

Electro-acupuncture is an addition to acupuncture therapy whereby an electrical current is run from an electro machine through connecting cables and attached to the heads of acupuncture needles to assist in stimulating the muscle/fascia via differing electrotherapeutic methods. Using the same points as traditional acupuncture, electro-acupuncture is a convenient stimulation technique that can be used for a variety of treatments. In cases of stubborn neurological disorders and chronic pain, electro-acupuncture may be the best option for point stimulation and effective treatments.

When treating musculoskeletal conditions, Electro-acupuncture successfully treats a variety of conditions, especially those that involve pain and inflammation. With this type of treatment, points needled are stimulated in a particular way. Anatomical local needling is often chosen, for reducing inflammation, increasing blood circulation and dilating blood vessels.

Herbal Medicine

Sometimes the most effective solution is a Chinese Herbal Formula. We often augment our treatment with herbs which tend to work more deeply and intricately with the systems in the body. The more systemic the condition of imbalance, the more effective herbs can be. For example, herbal medicine is excellent at treating and healing IBS, sleep issues, anxiety or depression, immune support, allergies and asthma, inflammation in the body, and can be a strong partner (with acupuncture) in healing pain, addiction, stroke, heart disease, mental disorders, and respiratory diseases (such as bronchitis and the common cold).

Celluma Light Therapy

Light Emitting Diode (LED) therapy is the application of light energy to tissue to obtain therapeutic benefits. The energy is used to improve cellular performance. Light therapy is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties and has a variety of applications across many medical fields. Research has shown that low level light therapy can: increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, and improve skin tone, texture and clarity. Specific wavelengths of light energy, when properly absorbed, up-regulates compromised cells. The light (photons) energy is absorbed by photo-acceptors in the mitochondria and used to create adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP produced then stimulates various metabolic processes which can result in the repair and regeneration of cell and tissue components.

PEMF Therapy

Years of scientific studies and research have yielded the Swiss PEMF therapy system, a device that mimics the earth’s magnetic field in frequencies and intensities optimizing human cell function. Pulsed PEMF therapy sends magnetic energy into the body. These energy waves work with your body's natural magnetic field to improve healing. The magnetic fields help you to increase electrolytes and ions. This naturally influences electrical changes on a cellular level and influences cellular metabolism. It works with your body’s own recovery processes to help relieve chronic pain. PEMF has been found to be particularly effective for chronic inflammation in joints or soft tissues, chronic fatigue symptoms or chronic  fatigue syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, osteopenia or osteoporosis, and poor wound healing. Some of the most common benefits of PEMF include giving patients more energy naturally, enhancing the body’s natural recovery process, correcting cellular dysfunction throughout the body, stimulating and exercising cells to recharge cells, improving athletic performance, reducing inflammation and pain, and helping to recover from an injury faster

FSM (Frequency-Specific Modulation) Therapy

Frequency-specific microcurrent (FSM) is a technique for treating pain by using low-level electrical current. The current is delivered to certain parts of your body to relieve pain. A frequency is the rate at which a sound wave or electronic pulse is produced. This measurement is registered in hertz (Hz). During FSM treatment, various frequencies can be used to potentially reduce swelling (inflammation), repair tissue and reduce pain. FSM is non-invasive and painless. The currents used are so low that you may not even feel them; you may only feel a warmth and softening of the tissues. During treatment, various frequencies are used to stimulate cell growth mimicking the electrical current produced by the human body within each of your cells. Specific frequencies are selected to encourage natural healing of the body.

One of the ways FSM works is by increasing the production of ATP inside injured tissue. ATP is the major source of energy for all cellular reactions in your body. FSM can increase the amount of ATP that’s created in your damaged cells by as much as 500%.

Rapid Release and Hypervolt Massagers

Rapid Release “Qi-Gun” is a high energy vibration therapy, used to relax muscles and  reduce aches and pains. Rapid Release is unique in utilizing high frequency vibration known to resonate with scar tissue releasing painful adhesions and increasing your range of motion. RRT is also unique in triggering highly beneficial neurological effects to quickly relieve spasms and eliminating pain neurotags. High frequency vibration is also extremely effective at increasing blood flow and easing up tight muscles and connective tissue promoting ease of movement in your everyday tasks or bettering your time on race day. Vibration has been shown to increase the hyaluronic acid pressure where the fascia resides. The heated tip lowers the viscosity of this fluid allowing the fibers to separate and easily glide. Fascia may be the missing piece for your lingering injury. Scar tissue forms in the body as a temporary patching mechanism for wounds caused by surgery, trauma or repetitive stress. Scar tissue fastened to tissues not normally connected, is called adhesion. Adhesions can spread, entrapping nerves, causing pain and numbness or limiting range of motion. Undiagnosed pain and restricted mobility are likely to be caused by these adhesions. RRT relies upon the science of resonance. Same principal as the opera singer who can vibrate a crystal glass across the room until it breaks. During your RRT treatment, the resonance energy is absorbed by the denser chronic fibrous tissues and it begins to vibrate those tissues to help them heal.
