She earned her ASA (Associate in the Society of Actuaries) while working full-time in her first career as an Actuary. She is passionate about learning new things, helping people feel better, and sharing her gifts and knowledge.

Her interests include running, reading, everything Peloton, hiking, biking and her three adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

This is her story, in her own words...

I frequently get asked what path brought me to acupuncture. Those who have known me as the Lead Research Scientist or as the Senior Data Scientist are perplexed at my departure  from corporate America, with a seemingly 180-degree turn away from my technology-centric past. It is interesting to point out that while mathematics and electrical engineering seem vastly different from the foundations of Chinese Medicine, they actually share far more similarities than I could ever have imagined. Both fields study the effect and application of electricity (energy) in the world or in the body, both fields rely on pattern-matching observation, analytical thinking, and even statistics to some extent. The body is an electrical field, measurable and observable, dependent on a delicate balance to work smoothly.

For as long as I can remember, as a very young child, I loved everything related to mathematics. But I also loved people, have always been fascinated by people, and it has always distressed me to witness people’s pain. I grew up in a very small town in east Texas, and we moved to New Braunfels (still a relatively small town when I was there) while I was in middle school. As I approached my teens, I began to realize my talent in math, but I also recognized that I had a gift for healing, both physically and emotionally. There didn’t seem to be a field of study that I could think of at that time, that directly connected these two areas, so my formal education focused on mathematics because that seemed more practical. I believed that a career in mathematics would be more likely to lead to a job with financial security, and my out-going people-loving personality didn’t think about what a typical workday as a mathematician would look like.

While in high school, I discovered a love of long-distance-running. I pursued a degree in pure mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin, because I loved mathematics, and I ran marathons because I loved running. You could say that I’m a passionate person who embraces fully that which interests me!

At the end of my undergraduate math degree, I learned about the field of Actuarial Science from one of my professors and decided that was going to be my career. I passed all of my Associate professional exams while working full-time. My favorite pastime, my break from the daily grind of studying and working hard was marathon-running. I ran 14 marathons between the ages of 19 and 26.

I met and married a fellow actuary, and we started our family. My oldest of three children, a girl, was born, and my life forever changed. I instantly fell head-over-heels in love with her and devoted myself to being a full-time stay-at-home mom, which started off being an 18-month planned break from work but ended up being a 13-year career which I found as rewarding as anything else I had ever done.

Leaving the field of Actuarial Science for 13 years meant I needed to go back to school to re-immerse myself in technical topics. I chose to attend Georgia Tech, and earned two master’s degrees, one in Applied Mathematics and one in Electrical Computer Engineering within a year of each other.

After finishing the master's degrees, I moved to Austin and worked as a Research Scientist at several different companies.  I realized that the same skills required of a mathematician and electrical engineer in research also applied to the emerging field of Data Science. I did some fascinating work in that field, but my soul longed to interact with people, to help people, to apply my analytical talents to a more humanitarian cause.

One day, I was lamenting that my current position as the Senior Data Scientist in the marketing department of a large company suited me intellectually but did not suit me at all emotionally. As I discussed this with a close friend, she asked me, “So, Becky, if you could do it all over again, what would you do?” I never expected to answer in this way, but what I said was, “I’d go to Medical School”. Her response of “well, there is more than one kind of Medical School” was my a-ha moment!

Within a month or so, I was at the Orientation Day at AOMA in Austin, TX. Three and a half years later, I completed my Master in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine degree, and six months after that, I passed all four of our medical boards exams (Acupuncture, Biomedical, Herbal Medicine, and Foundations of Chinese Medicine) and became a Texas-licensed acupuncturist!

From the start of my acupuncture journey, my goal has been to open my own practice. Life is an excellent teacher, and I pride myself on living very intentionally. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a life-long learning experience, regardless of how early one begins to study it. I’m very happy that is the case because learning new things, meeting new people, applying my intelligence to a worthy cause, and healing people is my calling. You could say I took the "long and winding road" to get here, but I truly believe that my life lessons and experiences have enriched my abilities and I am a better healer because of them.

I’m proud of my path, I'm proud of my accomplishments, and I’m proud of my clinic.

Welcome to the healing that awaits you at Mindful Spirit Acupuncture. Hope to see you soon!
